steel fabrication

Steel fabrication – what does is mean?

Structural steelwork designed, manufactured and installed by Steelwork Engineering

Here at Steelwork Engineering we often use the phrase ‘steel fabrication’ in our blog posts and with this in mind, we thought we’d explain in a little more detail what it actually means!

The term ‘steel fabrication’ is simply used to describe the process used to manufacture separate steel components. Once assembled and joined together, these separate components create a complete steel frame, designed to create the ‘skeleton’ of an office block, for example. Steel framed buildings are incredibly versatile because the frames can be manufactured from either standard sized steel sections, or if this isn’t appropriate, fabricated sections which are made to order.

The fabrication of steel sections has changed beyond all recognition over recent decades. In the not too distant past we used tape measures to check measurements, whilst these days we make the most of computer aided design and detailing. Computer aided design (CAD as it is widely known), is software which used to design each separate section. The CAD software we use is linked directly to the machinery on our factory floor, enabling us to reduce manufacturing times whilst ensuring consistent accuracy and quality.

Cut the cost of your building project by using prefabricated steel

The benefits of prefabricated steel construction

In comparison to traditional reinforced concreted, steel frame construction offers a wide range of advantages. From lower costs and enhanced sustainability through to flexibility and improved health and safety, increasing numbers of building projects are now making the most of prefabricated steel construction.

When compared to reinforced concrete, steel construction using a prefabricated steel frame can reduce the costs of a building project by up to 3%. Using prefabricated steel makes the most of the advantages of off-site construction, by helping to improve the speed of construction. Prefabricated steel buildings offer a range of benefits including:

  • Using prefabricated steel can significantly reduce construction times
  • Reduce construction times mean less time spent by fewer people on-site
  • Other trades are able to access the construction site earlier
  • Better use can be made of the construction site
  • Steel resists corrosion and offers increased fire protection
  • Services are easier to integrate
  • Steel is an extremely durable form of construction material, offering the capability to include large, unsupported spans
  • Flexibility is also improved thanks to the ability to create larger open spaces which can be divided up at a later date
  • Foundation costs are reduced thanks to steel’s superb strength to weight ratio
  • Steel framed buildings can be easily adapted during the construction process; for example if the client wants to alter their plans

Prefabricated steel buildings designed, manufactured and constructed by Steelwork Engineering

Here at Steelwork Engineering we have decades of experience in the design, manufacture and construction of prefabricated steel buildings. Understanding the benefits of steel

Steel becomes the first choice for the UK construction industry

According to research published by New London Architecture, a record 115 tall buildings are currently under construction in London, with a further 500 in the planning stages. Steel is vital component of these construction projects and is transforming city skylines across the globe.

Why has steel become so popular? The answer is actually fairly simple and because steel offers a wide range of benefits, it is now widely recognised as a durable, cost effective choice for construction projects of all shapes and sizes. As regular readers of our blog will know, we often talk about the benefits of steel in construction and here are a few examples of the benefits it could offer:

  • Health and safety: steel building components are manufactured off-site, before being erected by skilled construction specialists. This results in rapid, waste-free assembly times, helping to keep time spent on-site to a minimum, therefore improving the health and safety of construction teams.
  • Sustainability: steel is one of the most sustainable building materials there is as the majority of the steel used in construction is recycled. Steel lasts far longer than other building materials and once a steel building has been erected, will outlast other building materials whilst being relatively easy to extend and adapt in the future.
  • Fire performance: when it comes to performance in the event of a fire, steel is pretty hard to beat. Steel is efficiently engineered to provide exceptional fire resistance, whilst buildings constructed from steel benefit from innovative fire protection systems.
  • Economic benefits: steel offers a number of benefits, from taking a load off a building’s foundations, through to speedy construction and cost savings in an increasingly competitive market. Steel is also highly durable and is flexible – ideal for the changing times we live.

These are just some of the advantages that steel could offer your next construction project and here at Steelwork Engineering we provide a range of cost-effective products and services, from structural steelwork and mezzanine flooring, through to fire escapes, access ladders and installation services.

Steel – the four reasons it should be part of your construction project

The advantages of using structural steelwork in a construction project

Here at Steelwork Engineering we supply all types of structural steelwork for use in buildings of all shapes and sizes; from large industrial units and warehouses, through to small retail units. The advantages of using steel in a construction project are clear so we thought we’d outline the four main benefits this versatile building material can bring:

  1. Fast construction: speed equals efficiency and cost savings and because steel structures can be erected so quickly, other trades are able to start work on site much sooner. In comparison to concrete framed buildings the savings steel offers are obvious and this is one of the many reasons steel is now so popular with the construction industry.
  2. Cost efficiency: steel is cheaper than it once was and thanks to significant advances in productivity and the supply chain, savings can be passed onto customers in the form of competitively priced steel products.
  3. Durability: steel is exceptionally durable and because it doesn’t decay or age as quickly as other building materials, it lasts significantly longer before refurbishment is required. In addition, steel framed buildings can be easily adapted and extended, helping to avoid the associated costs and disruption of extensive building work.
  4. Health and safety: health and safety is, of course, of paramount importance in any construction project. Thanks to the off-site fabrication of steel components, along with quick on-site assembly, both help to make steel a safe construction material.
