How could a mezzanine floor benefit your business?

Installing a mezzanine floor offers a practical and cost effective way to take your business to the next level -literally. In this blog post we’ll take a look at what mezzanine floors are, the different types available and the pros and cons of each type. Then, in our next post in two weeks time, we’ll look at the benefits of mezzanine flooring and how they can be used.

What are mezzanine floors?

Mezzanine floors have a smaller footprint than the ground floor of a building and are installed either between the roof or the floor above. Mezzanine floors only partially extend above the floor below and so aren’t considered to be a main floor. As such, construction costs are kept to a minimum as the mezzanine floor and the floor below it both share the same ceiling.

A range of different types of mezzanine flooring are available, with options to suit different types of businesses. Where aesthetics are important, such as in a shop, for example, the mezzanine will extend out of the walls of the building. However, in locations where looks aren’t as much of an issue, a free-standing mezzanine floor can be constructed, supported by metal columns which extend upwards from the floor. This type of mezzanine floor is ideal for use in warehouses, factories or storage facilities.

Mezzanine floors which are supported by columns on the floor below are the most cost-effective option as complex and expensive building work on the existing building isn’t required. As such, stand alone mezzanine floors can be designed and constructed to any size specification, before being assembled within the building.

It’s also possible to design and install mezzanine floors which are supported from the ceiling of the existing building. However, because the majority of buildings lack the heavy duty structural support required to achieve, the cost of installing this type of mezzanine floor usually outweighs any benefits. However, where if the existing structure is suitable, mezzanine flooring suspended from the ceiling offers an incredibly stylish option.
